My Happiness Project: Quick Ways to Get Happy

I’ve set myself a project…the happiness project! It’s a project for me to make myself happier. Usually, my projects are work or flat related – it felt like it was time to take on one that was me related!

So what makes you happy? For me the answer to this question is family, friends…chocolate!… but what else? I tried to add more to the list but really struggled to pinpoint what exactly makes me feel one of the best emotions there is…happiness.

I decided to monitor and write down when I felt happy during the week. Here’s what was on my list:

  • Having a good nights sleep
  • An out of the blue Whatsapp message from a friend I haven’t heard from in a while
  • Listening to upbeat music
  • Going swimming
  • Running in the park and being around greenery
  • Having a bath with a Lush bath bomb
  • Getting my nails done
  • Someone complimenting my nails
  • Taking a good photo

When I first read my list back I was amazed at how simple the actions and activities that created the happiness emotion were. I also noticed the domino effect that my happiness created for example when I got my nails done it caused further happiness when I received a compliment about them.

Having recognised what made me happy during the week the next step was to plan how I will incorporate these activities into my life as much as possible. Here’s the plan:

  • Have a sleep routine where I go to sleep at the same time each night and wake up at the same time each morning
  • Make playlists with upbeat music that I can listen to when I need a pick me up
  • Schedule time to go swimming every week
  • Schedule time to run in the park every week
  • Buy a selection of Lush bath bombs
  • Book an appointment to get my nails done every month
  • Print out the best photos I have taken.

  1. Awesome post!
My blog is partially a lifestyle blog also so this has inspired me.

Music makes me happy. Finding just the right song to fit the moment makes me happy. Food makes me happy. Sleeping makes me happy. And also, being off work after a long days work makes me happy and I feel like I’ve completed a journey!

  2. So many small things make us happy everyday. I think a lot of the times we don’t even realize and acknowledge the fact that something made us happy, but rather sulk in our hectic lives

      1. Exactly, we rarely ever notice the things that nake us smile, but we tend to dwell on things that make us slightly uncomfortable

  6. Hi Tracey. Thanks for the follow and bringing me here to your blog. It’s great to give a few moments to think about what makes one happy as I begin my morning chores. I had never thought of nail varnish as having any effect on my mood, but you’re right now that I consider it. I look forward to following your project.

  9. It’s amazing what small thing make us happy. I remember being in a dark place before Christmas last year when someone asked me a really difficult question. They asked me ‘What makes you happy?’ I couldn’t give them a direct answer because I didn’t know. We get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life we forgot the simplest things.

    1. You are so right we forget the simplist things. I found it so hard to pinpoint what made me happy before I did this.

  10. Nice to learn how easy it is to be happy, and how easier it is to make you so very happy. One does not get people who become happy so fast. Thank you for making it happen to the others.
